... Richard Dean Anderson apparently decided he was getting too old for running around like an action hero. Tell me about it. Have you seen him in those Zaxby's commercials? He looks like an old man!

This is a thread for talking about Stargate. I've already said that it's my second favorite sci-fi series, after Star Trek (Dr. Who) squeaking narrowly into third place). It's not Star Trek but it's an amazing series! I love it!

Have you seen the new Stargate Universe series? I think I completely lost interest something like 20 minutes into the pilot.

Which of the main characters do you like best? Or which one do you identify with, if that's an easier question?

There was the Asgard, who were from another galaxy entirely. Daniel Jackson's mentor once met Atzec gods (but we never saw them again). Among the Goa'uld, we had Egyptian, Chinese, Celtic, Indian, Greek, even one who called himself Satan. There was mention of a Babylonian, Bellus, but I don't remember seeing any in the series. The Asgard turned out to be the Roswell Grays.
You said Daniel's mentor, he was his Grandfather too wasn't he? I'm assuming you mean Nicholas Ballard.

I think you're right.
The odd thing about the Asgard was that they reproduced exclusively by cloning, which meant that they were a dying race.

I especially liked the episode that Daniel's grandfather was in. He was the only one that could see Daniel when he was out of phase. He tells Nick to repeat exactly what he's saying to O'Neill. O'Neill makes some smart-alec remark and Daniel says, "Jack, don't be an @$$" and Nick repeats it word for word, so Jack knows Daniel said it.

Oh yeah, the Crystal Skull! And then Nick claims that "Daniel says that I have to go with you." (or words to that effect). "You're taking advantage of this situation, aren't you?" -- "Yes, I am." There were so many great moments in this episode. When they first meet Nick Ballard, he's in an asylum, and they leave him sitting in an empty room talking to "Daniel". He looks like a sad, crazy old man until Daniel finally realizes... "You can SEE me!" -- "Yes, Daniel, I can see you."

This is one of my favorite episodes. Did you notice Nick just strolls through the gate without hesitation. When Catherine Langford went through in "Torment of Tantalus", she had Jack and Daniel on each side holding her up. That was about 2 years earlier and they were still prone to tumbling head over heels out the other side. I guess they didn't want her breaking her hip. I wish they had followed up on this episode and we could have learned more about Nick's "giant aliens". One fan theory I've read is that they were the Furlings. I also wish they could have followed up on Nem from the episode "Fire and Water". Have you ever read any Stargate novels? There is one called City of the Gods (I think). And it follows up on the episode "The Crystal Skull" and ties the giant aliens to Mayan and Aztec mythology.

You read my mind! I was just going to mention "Torment of Tantalus" as one of my favorites, too! Poor Ernest stranded all alone on an alien planet for 50 years with nothing but the memory of Catherine to keep him from going insane.
I never considered the Aztecs as possibly the Furlings. Hmmm, on balance I'd say probably not, because they found a sample of Furling writing at that other site along with Asgard and Nox writing. They wouldn't need this "universal language" if they were part of an alliance with other races. And why didn't they find Furling writing there?
I haven't even seen any Stargate novels. I'm aware that they exist. Somebody told me that they were very different from the television series.

There is a series of novels based on the movie (sequels to the movie I guess you would say) and they ARE very different from the series. I've listened to the audio commentary for the DVD of the movie, and one of the producers (Emmerich) made a point of saying that "We didn't have anything to do with the series". It sounded kind of snooty to me the way he said it. Don't get me wrong, I like the movie, I even prefer the movie version of characters for some of the characters.* But I love the series. The novels based on the series, I ordered off of Amazon instead of buying them at a store.** That's where I got the one mentioned in the above post and another one by the same author called Roswell (it's a time travel adventure).*** *I prefer the movie versions of Shau'ri/Sha're and Feretti. I actually think series Feretti seemed like a combo of Kawalsky and Feretti. But I prefer the series Daniel more. **I used to buy Star Trek novels at a local bookstore (Waldenbooks), but they closed down. Other stores like Walmart (at least in this area) very rarely carry Star Trek novels. I actually don't like to get into them much anymore because many times they are part of a series of novels and you have to read the whole series to get the whole story. I can get books on a Kindle, but going to that bookstore and getting a couple of Trek novels (a real paper book) a month was guilty pleasure that is now gone forever. ***It turns out the Asgard really are the Roswell Greys. At least in this novel.

Personally, I didn't like the movie version of "Stargate" at all! The plot was lame, and none of the characters really appealed to me. That's why when I was told the novels built on the movie and not the series, I basically said, "thanks but no thanks."
I almost must confess (shockingly) that I don't read Star Trek novels either. I read some of the early ones, and the characters just didn't seem to act like the characters I knew. I have most of the movie adaptations, and even in some of them the characters feel off. But then I live in a small town where the only place to get books is the Walmart, and as you say they don't carry specialty series like this anyway.

Well there is some fanfiction that is better than the novels anyway. I think I know what you mean about the movie adaptations characterizations being off.

Anyway, back to Stargate. I noticed in an earlier post, you said you lost interest in the third series "Universe". I agree 100%. I just could not get into it like I did SG1 and Atlantis.
