So, this doesn't take place in the "real" Trek universe, and that's a good thing. What should we call the new continuity? Pine Trek, JJ-verse, Zach Trek?

There are few strange things, especially the the Vulcan planet and Spock's mum. But I think that's because there will be room for other movie/movies.

Perhaps, perhaps not. Nothing is certain in this alternate timeline. Anything can happen.

Think of it either being an infinite number of parallel universes or like Star-Gate SG1 refers to it as the "Multi verse"! Anything that can happen in fact does happen some where!

The plot was easy enough to follow, even with the time splittin elements. The only thing I'd wonder if I was really reading into this is why, when people in the Trek mythology have traveled into the past a zillion times, is this the first time a parrallel universe was split off from that traveling?
In any event, it was clear and a fun story.

Also, remember that the Federation has 129 years to prepare for the ultranova. They'll stop it no problem.

Perhaps, perhaps not. Nothing is certain in this alternate timeline. Anything can happen. Exactly. Nero destroyed Vulcan to prevent the destructon of Romulus. Romulus is destroyed in the prime universe. However, since Spock is still alive there still remains the possibility that it could happen again (i.e. history repeating itself), or perhaps this encounter with the red matter will cause him to think twice about using it in the distant future. Actually, I do have an answer for this. I once saw a Star Trek interview in which the people interviewed (I can't remember whom at the moment) basically said that Star Trek's time travel stories evolve as real time travel theory evolves. The theory of branching universes when one is disrupted hadn't been considered in the 60's, so original series time travel episodes reflected the current knowledge of quantum mechanics. And we do see some of it in later Trek shows. For instance, in "Future Tense" Sisko has to impersonate a famous historical figure, Gabriel Bell, after the real Gabriel Bell is prematurely murdered. Then later in the series, in "Little Green Men" when Nog is on his way to Earth to join the Academy, he sees a picture of Bell and Sisko's image has taken the place of the original Bell's image.
