I was also wondering if they might have done a series with Captain Sulu. they could have had guest appearances from other caste members from TOS. Tuvok from Voyager was on Sulu's ship the first time he was in Star-Fleet.

I met George Takei at a convention and someone shouted out, "Tell us about Excelsior!" George replied, "Well, I wasn't going to bring it up, but, since you mention it..." He then proceeded to talk about the idea for the show, including his idea for a young ensign Picard, to whom Sulu would introduce a love for Earl Grey tea.
At that point I raised my hand and he called on me. I offered to play Picard and he asked, "Ah but can you act?" I responded with, "I can do anything you want, George." (Don't think I would phrase it that way if I had it to do over again).
Anyway, he tells us that some fans created Excelsior t-shirts and that, oh, he just happened to be wearing one. He unbuttoned his shirt and showed it to everyone.

It's too bad that ALL the original cast members have gotten too old for this sort of thing now. But... there's no reason they couldn't recast it. That guys who plays Hiro on "Heroes" would be a good candidate to play Sulu, for example.

I only saw the first season of "Heroes" before I got bored with it, but in one episode we got a glimpse of his future self (without glasses), and he looked pretty cool. Or... the Korean guy on "Lost" would be a good choice, too (as you can probably tell, I don't watch "Lost" much either).

I've been thinking about this, and I wonder if anyone's heard of a Fan Fiction writer using Rene Picard (Jean-Luc's nephew). If he attended the academy at all, he should have graduated about the time of "Nemesis", shouldn't he?

This is a good idea, but there is a problem. Picard's nephew was killed in a house fire.

You know I had completely forgotten about that? Was that in "Generations" we learned about that? "Generations" is the only Star Trek movie I've only seen once, because it rarely comes on television.
Which reminds me of similar point -- when I started writing my own stories, I came very close to chosing Alyssa Ogawa as my Chief Medical Officer, but then I figured someone else had already beaten me to it.

I've got Generations on DVD now which is good but my mum says that they dont make it anymore. The only reason i got it was because we got it off ebay really cheap.

i liked it and wish it had gone the distance but i think i would have liked it a little more if they had chose something set in the time frame with ds9 voyager and next generation.
what i think is really sad is that in order for a new trek series to take off today it would almost have to be based on more of a battle ship. people today just seem to really want big battles and big effects. and on one hand i wouldnt mind seeing a change up like that, but on the other hand it sort of seems to go against the purpose of trek.
but with the stargates usually doing well and a star wars tv show in the works, i really just want them to give trek another chance on tv.

I agree with you to a certain extent. The current trend seems to be for "dark" science fiction, like Battlestar Galactica. And the new Stargate Universe seems to be trending in that direction too. What little I've seen of it, they spend most of their time plotting against one another. I shudder to imagine a new Star Trek series if they felt they had to do the same thing...

If they go with this "Dark Sci-Fi" in a new Star Trek series, It makes me think of the dark and violent Mirror Universe!

people really want to see action these days it seems. and even in the last few series it seemed as if the ratings needed a little boost they would always have to resort to conflicts starting and having those big season finale battles. so i could see them making the jump to just doing the battle angle and skipping the whole exploring angle. and its sad because DS9 was actually my least favorite of the treks, mostly because it had that tension to it. where it often seemed alot of people didnt care for each other and they always had to watch others closely. and there were so many forces constantly at odds or just loosely allied. and there are enough shows working that angle now, which is why i would hope a new trek could be a breath of fresh air from that trend.
