Even as a hypothetical situation, we can use it to discuss what it right or wrong. In this case, genocide. Is genocide ever justified?
On the other hand, I'm not entirely sure that the word "genocide" applies to the Borg. As far as I know, they aren't a genetically distinct species in and of themselves, are they? They're more like a virus which infect other species.

Genocide, a heavy topic. At what point is genocide justified?
Well, would you justify genocide of a species if it was know that they would destroy the human race?

However, the people that make up the borg are helpless. They certainly don't chose to be destroyers of the human race. Hence, the tragedy.

Not just the borg, what other species? Would we be more willing to kill off the Romulans to save ourselves than the Vulcans?

No. I don't think genocide is EVER justified. You say, "if it were known that they would destroy the human race" -- how would you KNOW that? It would be enough to simply prevent whatever plot they have going on. When you're talking about an entire race, there will always be some who are innocent, who aren't part of the conspiracy to destroy you. Why should they suffer as well?

That is the point of genocide, innocents should never be sacrificed. Now another question, what if none were innocent, all were conspiring against the human race?

The only people I can think of who would fit there might be the Daleks (from Dr. Who). Each individual Dalek is genetically programmed with the idea that they are the Supreme Race in the universe, and all others are to be Exterminated. Varel can probably tell us if the Doctor would destroy the Daleks if he ever had the chance.
Or the Replicators of Stargate SG-1. But the Replicators are just mindless replicators. Stopping them would be acceptable by whatever means necessary. I'm talking about a living race of beings. Can you give me an example of a living race who are ALL bent on destruction?

Comeing full circle, the Borg, they are not bent on destruction, but assimilation.

Yes, but it's because of those nano-things that infect them. If they could be removed or disabled, the people that make up the Borg hive would return to normal, as Hugh did.

True, but if the technology was not available to to remove them all to make them innocent... well...

You're saying you would just go ahead and kill them all? I don't think I could do this. It's one thing, as I said, to defend yourself from attack, but mass murder is something else again.

Speaking of favorite episodes, I've just remembered another -- "The First Duty" -- the one where Wesley got into trouble at Starfleet Academy. And doesn't that Locarno guy remind you of Tom Paris?

Pick one of your favorite episodes and name three things that you liked about it. For example...
"The First Duty"
1) Boothby, the crusty old groundskeeper meeting Picard again after all those years. "Captain of the Enterprise -- looks like you turned out okay."
2) Gates McFadden acting exactly like a mother, feeling Wesley's arm as if that would reassure her that he was okay.
3) Starfleet academy, the quaint little things like doorknobs.
4) The way Data and Geordi analyzed the information from the sensor scans and deduced that something had happened that the cadets weren't talking about.
5) Picard's speech. "The first duty of every Starfleet cadet is to the Truth, whether scientific truth, or moral truth, or personal truth..."
6) Courtroom scenes are always dramatic, especially when somebody changes his testimony at the last minute.
Well, name at least three things!

I think inthe episode Descent that you were talking about earlier, an admiral expressly ORDERED Picard that if he were ever in that sitaution again, he should upload the virus and kill them all. Could you obey an order like that, if it went against your moral principles?
