Getting back to the topic, I just saw this episode on the Labor Day marathon, which refreshed my memory just a bit. It certainly does seem as if T'Pol is relating a story which really happened (because as I mentioned before, I don't think she has enough imagination to have invented the story out of whole cloth), but obviously as the dinner went on, she was inventing details to amuse Archer and Trip. For example, the part about her great-grandmother introducing Velcro to Earth just strikes me as ridiculous!

T'Pol's great grandmother introducing Velcro would be in violation of the Vulcan's not interference laws. She could have invented the story if she wanted to, but it looked like she was telling a true story. It could have been embellished though!

The non-interference directive would be the least of my worries. It's just that the invention of Velcro is well documented. The inventor got the idea from picking burrs off of his clothes after a walk in the country.

Atoz, now that you mention it, I do remember that story about the discovery that led to the invention of Velcro. They should have done more thorough research to not to have made this error. They could have used something else not so documented ,but obscure.

I'm just saying that indicates to me that T'Pol was making up that part, to make the story more interesting. The basic situation -- a Vulcan ship crash-landing, having to temporarily blend in with the culture, then leaving one member behind -- might very well have happened, but T'Pol was inventing a lot of the details. That seems to me to be the most parsimonious explanation for this episode, all things considered.

Atoz, I never considered the story that way. It does make sense to embellish a story to make it more entertaining.

And the rating were low...

As I have said in another way, they had to do something to make things interesting in the story to keep the show going due to low ratings.

Atoz, I never considered the story that way. It does make sense to embellish a story to make it more entertaining. And if you look at it this way, you can argue that T'Pol has a sense of humor (even though it's normally not evident)! If she did any research of 20th century conspiracy theories, she would have found out that some people claimed that some technologies (Velcro among them) were backward-engineered from the flying saucer that crashed at Roswell. Since the Roswell "crash" is obviously a myth, she was playing a subtle gag on them!

Good point Atoz. This does fit in with conspiracy theories and reverse engineering technology from UFOs. I didn't know that there was a conspiracy theory about the origin of Velcro.

This is probably my favorite episode of Enterprise (which was probably my least favorite series). But like I said there are things I like and dislike about each series. I think it's a great story. You know it was around the same time I saw this episode that I saw the movie October Sky. The teenage boy in the episode Carbon Creek sort of reminded my of Homer Hickham in October Sky. Because he lived in a small mining town, he was very smart and interested in space travel and wanted to go to college, but his prospects for that looked bleak. At least until T'Pol's ancestress sold the idea of Velcro to a business man.

I must have missed "October Sky". That is I remember the movie, but I never saw it. Funny how the least little thing can change the course of history...
