Just wanted to say, Saw the movie ( at last) liked it but didnt love it. Spock is too human, Kirk is far too reckless and whats with Uhura? This movie is going to do very well with younger & new trek fans but I can see a bit of disserpointment coming form the direction of oldies like myself... I'm a traditionalist and much profer lenoard Nimoys Spock.. and Shatners Kirk *shrugs* just me .

I haven't seen the new movie yet , but from what I have learned about it so far, My feelings about it when I do see it won't be all that different than yours Varel. I can understand how the older fans like myself would be disappointed in the changing things and for the younger fans to like it more. At this point I would say that when I do see the new movie my feelings will probably be mixed!!

Dont get me wrong I did enjoy watching it, and it was action packed from start to finish but there was a few things in the story line that irritated me and were not 'Trek', but I'm just one person with their own oppinion

I understand what you mean! I will have my own review of the new movie when I get to see it! It may not be for a couple more weeks though.

I understand how you can feel like that Varel. The fact of the matter is is that Spock was young then and didn't have much control over his emotions, like 100% all the time. He did seem pretty human, but seeing as how Vulcans can live around 300 years they had to make it look like that, personality and appearance. I'm only a 12 year Trekkie, and I loved the movie. The catch phrases they pulled them off flawlessly. I'm sure they could of worked their traits more because they didn't seem spacey at times.

I agree, Admiral Spock. The writers took great care to respect established background stories (well, to a point). I mean that details of their lives were consistent. In "Journey to Babel" Spocks mother talked about the mocking abuse that Spock suffered as a child, and his reactions. It's presented here.
Nevertheless, this is Jim Kirk's movie first and foremost. We don't get the Prime Directive dilemmas, moral choices and social commentary, at all. We do get to see how the young cavalier formed.

From everything I've heard, the writers did no such thing, Kijuro. As we saw from Shakfar's synopsis, the story apparently starts with Kirk around 19 or 20 years old, being told he should join Starfleet Academy. He attends, apparently graduates five minutes later, and immediately becomes First Officer of the Enterprise! This makes absolutely no sense!
Pluse, in TOS we were told that Kirk graduated about the age of 19, that he served as an instructor, then as Lieutenant on the Farragut and on the Republic, that he was depicted in "A Piece of the Action" as being unable to drive an internal combustion engine. I could also complain that in "The Man Trap", we see a conversation between Spock and Uhura which clearly contradicts any notion that they were ever romantically involved.

Atoz. What episodes did Kirk do these things or these things were told or him? I'm curious to know!

"The Deadly Years" establishes that Captain Kirk is 34 years old. In "Shore Leave", he talks about a midshipman at the Academy named Finnegan who picked on him 15 years earlier. Simple logic, Mr. Spock.

But some of them have passed away and those that are still alive are not young anymore. Much as I enjoyed seeing Nimoy again as Spock, the man is not going to live forever. The actors in the movie did a great job with the roles of the original crew. It's the writing and story that I have a problem with.

i guess they are trying to find their own way to keep the legend going. Probably wasn't necessary for this movie. They should of started fresh with a brand new cast, not adding on old ones not that I don't want to see them Leonard Nimoy is one of my favorites. It just seems that if they want to continue doing new movies and such, they have to start anew

You know what really irks me? The movie doesn't have a title, like "Nemesis" or "Insurrection". It's not even "Star Trek XI", it's just "Star Trek". Add to that the fact that the original ad campaign was "forget everything you know", gives me the impression that they're trying to pretend all the other movies and series never happened, and they're starting over! It's far too late to pull a George Lucas at this date, but at least he wove his movies together in a coherent whole!

i guess prequels work in weird ways sometimes. I was also wondering why he didn't name it. At least it would give us something to think about instead of just 'Star Trek'.

By background details, I mean just some little things, like Spock's childhood and refusal of a spot at the Vulcan Science Academy. Yes, they messed with continuity, but they did show that they knew the original material (it wasn't just JJ writing the film).
