I tried to watch the Valiant again, but 10 minutes into episode, and I found that the Captain really made me believe that there is something seriously wrong with Starfleet's recruitment-policy. That kid should have been dropped of on the nearest Q-class Planet.
I am certain Starfleet has a clearly defined policy about what to do, when a ship ends up in a situation like the Valiant, and I bet it is not "Carry on with the mission."
And everybody knows that if you stuff a room full with hormone-crazed teenagers it isn't work or duty they will be thinking of.

the thing is with that situation is that he is still a cadet. He did not start to have these issues until all of the regular officers died and assumed command. A command of a ship at his age is a lot of responsibility, stress, frustration, and dedication. I am not surprised that he acted this way. The thing is the rest of the crew were cadets and they needed a leader, regardless of what they know behind closed doors

The valiant was a good ship with a not so great captain. He was really foolish to attack the jem hadar battleship.

He must of been really stressed though and just wanted to impress. Still though, he was foolish I agree
