well...as i said there were no babies in the house and a couple of blokes heard it, and at the most maybe two beers each had been consumed with no other "substances"...and besides family had said the house had some strange goings on over the years, nothing visual, just noises and moved objects and stuff

The way it sounds, you ddint hear it yourself, right? It was just these friends told you about it? I dont know what kind of night birds they ahve in Australia but in America we have screech owls. And they can keep you awake if you're not used to them.

Well, twenty-five years ago. We like to think that our memories are precisely accurate, but the sad fact is that they're reconstructive. If they were convinced that the sounds they heard were babies crying, that's what they'll remember to this day. But as I said, I don't want this to become just an exercise in debunking. What did you think back then, when they told you about the crying but before the skeletons were found? Did you think they were pulling your leg?

hmmm...well I knew it wasnt 4 blokes having the same dream at the same time, so i remained sceptical until the walls came down and that pretty much cemented the event

Nice thread! All the stories are interesting and I am a big fan of hearing them but I'm not sure if I am sold on most of them...I believe in the supernatural but some stories do seem far fetched. Has anyone ever seen the BS show by Penn and Teller? They did a few episodes about physics and ghosts.

That's on Showtime, isn't it? I don't subscribe to that channel.
I'd be the last one to say that there are no mysteries left. At the same time, I'm a Science Officer, so I always have to look for a scientific explanation where one is possible. The idea of disembodied spirits seems to conflict with what we know about nature. Where does the energy come from to direct a spirital manifestation, for one thing?

Yes it is. I don't have cable but my bf does and he's a big fan of the show.
I think it's one of those things were you believe or you don't and if your one who doesn't then the only way your mind is going to be changed is to have a real "encounter" of some kind. Wonder if there will ever be any real scientific proof.

Yes it's true that I probably wouldn't believe in the paranormal unless I had a personal experience with it. But in reverse, people who believe in the paranormal are usually not swayed by any scientific explanation, because they cherish that experience they had and don't want to lose it.
I remember a woman telling me about a ghostly encounter she had, and she was sort of "challenging" me to explain it. So I asked her for every detail she could remember. Once she was done, I had a hypothesis right away, but you know what she did? She suddenly "remembered" more details to invalidate my hypothesis. In essence, she changed her story. That's why I say I don't necessarily care about debunking anymore. I just want to hear about your experience whatever it is, and I'll politely keep my explanation to myself.

Okay what about the paranormal programs on television? Are any of them any good? I've sampled a few, but I always end up laughing at the ridiculous mess they pass off as an "investigation".

I havent seen any. I watched one called Paranormal State last week, they were supposed to be investigating the Jersey Devil, but about all they did was talk to people who claimed to have seen it, then they wandered around in the woods with cameras looking scared. They assumed that any "real" animal would run away as soon as it heard them so anything they caught on the camera must be a paranormal creature!

It depends. Most of them are pretty much worthless because they're ENTERTAINMENT. They reenact things instead of really investigating. You can pretty much tell when they "investigators" carry cameras which are pointing in their own faces most of the time. It's obvious they aren't interesting in recording what's going on... they're just recording their own reactions to what's going on.

It's a good story, but I don't see how people can take it seriously. I mean, some people even think the Atlanteans came from another planet. How absurd can you get?
