Partly that, but I was thinking of something more fundamental. Believers want to prove that the paranormal is real, so take a believer in a supposedly "haunted" house. She hears a random noise, she's going to attribute it to the paranormal. A skeptic doesn't have anything to prove, so he's more likely to just say it was a random noise.

As far as I'm concerned, I'm not trying to "prove" anything. I just want people to exercise a little care and caution when they decide they "can't explain" something so it must be "paranormal".

Okay but what if believers are just "tuned in" better? you know, it would be as if skeptics just happen to be colorblind or something.

I wouldn't want to completely rule out the possibility of that. It's just too ad hoc. The universal success of science is based on empirical evidence, observations that can be repeated. If I conduct an experiment in Georgia, you can conduct the same experiment in Virginia and theoretically get the same results. Once you have to posit a phenomenon that some people can see and other people can't, I have to wonder if it's a real phenomenon at all. Whatever you're doing at that point, I'm not sure you can call it science anymore.

You see this mentioned on a lot of paranormal shows, but actually there's plenty of reason to be skeptical about THAT too! I'm not sure that it's not another myth. I read about one scientist who rigged up a helmet with solenoids on it. He found that when the magnetic fields were turned on, people seemed to have strange "psychic" experiences. But then another scientist came along using the same equipment, only he didn't tell his subjects the machine was turned OFF. They STILL had "psychic" experiences! So it might once again be just the power of suggestion. Why do you think hypnosis works? It only works because people believe it works.

That's interesting! so just bedause it sounds like a scientific explanation doesn't really mean it is one!

Very true! You have to be skeptical about everything these days.

Here's an interesting site I just found. It has all kinds of fascinating paranormal topics, but it doesn't dive completely off the deep end, either... strangemag.com/
