Okay, let's talk about the paranormal. What do you make of this? -- a cat which allegedly is able to sense when nursing home patients are about to die. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_(cat)

Well, is it really paranormal? Or is it merely something we have not yet come up with the answer to due to lack of understanding on how cats see a dying person? Maybe it may even just be something Oscar himself has the ability for like some people have incredibly sensitive hearing or keen eyesight.
After all, cats are known for detecting illness in their owners and sensing impending earthquakes and so forth.
It is still interesting though - they even call the patient's family to warn them when the cat goes to a person.

He can allegedly predict to within two hours when someone will die. I'd call that paranormal. I don't think we can put it down to simply superior hearing or smell, either. If sick or dying people gave off a particular smell, humans would also have noticed it.
I think it's just another example of the human tendency to notice things they want to notice and ignore things they don't. It's like saying, "it always rains after you mow the lawn (or wash the car)". They don't notice the times the cat is "wrong", because that wouldn't make as much of an uplifting human interest story.

Ray Hyman says before you explain something you'd better be sure there is something that has to be explained. In the article they mention the cat is rong sometimes but I dont see where they actually bothered to count up the times hes wrong and the times he isnt. If it makes the families feel better to think theres a cat that can see when people are going to die I gues its ok. But if they were making a claim they'd have to do better than this.

Well yes. If you Google "Oscar the cat", you'll turn up several different articles from different sources. The original, by Dr. Dora, didn't make a big deal out of it. He was mainly interested in how the patients and their families reacted to the cat. You notice a curious lack of interest in how Oscar senses "death" -- that is curious in an empirical scientist, not so curious in a doctor.

Wow did you guys ever pick my favorite topic in the whole wide world! How about the Michigan Dog Man? And the Beast of Bray Road? They basically live in the same region between Wisconsin and Michigan. Man...I wish my computer hadn't died two days ago. Stupid viruses. Anyway, I'll see if I can find that link and put it up here for you folks to look over.
For the record, the paranormal is out there. I live in a house that has several ghosts in it. There is a man, a cat, a horse and a little girl. I have seen the cat, the man and the horse. My parents have seen the man, the girl and the horse. I'll share the stories to all of them if you guys want. Just lemme know. Meanwhile, I'll dig up that site on the MDM/BoBR.
And that Beast of Bodmin Moor is definitely a cat. The skull proves it if nothing else. That is definitely a cat skull.

The skull definitely looks like one. But according to the scale, it's 15, 16 centimeters long -- say six inches?

I measured the heads of some of my cats (as well as possible with them squirming), and my biggest tom, Bruno, has a head 11, nearly 12 centimeters long. So we're talking about an animal not much bigger than a domestic cat, or maybe a fox. It certainly couldn't bring down a sheep, the way the "Beast" is supposed to.
But yes, Dr. Caraway, the topic is open to anything paranormal. I'd like to hear your anecdotes.

paranormal huh ?...righto, about 25 years ago, a bunch of mates and myself went on a bike riding holiday ( motorbikes) and we stopped in at a great aunt of mine near goulburn NSW, she lived in this splendid old house built early in the 1800's..ANYWAY....next morning a few of the boys and myself were having a smoke and a coffee out front when one said that the crying baby was giving him the shits, a few people agreed with him, I knew for a fact there was no babies crying or otherwise, the youngest grand kid in the house was probably 5....ANYWAY...eventually they sold up when my aunt passed and in the process of demolishing the residence 4 baby skeletons were found bricked up in the wall....in one of its incarnations the house was a nuns residence...explain that one

I could think of several, or at least several questions I'd ask about the incident, but I don't necessarily want debunking to be the main focus of this topic. What's your explanation? Do you really think the paranormal was involved or that it was just a odd thing that happened?
