It would have been interesting to explore the whole idea of "absolute" right-and-wrong, which when you think about it is an integral part of most religions. But in the context of this story, the idea was kind of muddled. I'm sorry to say the thing I remember most about this episode was the horrible costumes the Edo wore. They were supposed to be sexy, but they looked completely impractical, especially on people who supposedly run everywhere!

Yeah, it was like they were wearing diapers or something! Absolute right and wrong, is there such a thing?

Well, the Edo "god" seemed to think so. But as Riker pointed out, when it comes to life, there are always extenuating circumstances. You can't just carve one or two rules in stone and expect them to hold forever. When you think about it, that's the reason we have judges, to decide when to throw the book at the miscreant and and when to cut a little slack.

At first I thought the Edo god was kind of interesting but it turned out it was just a plot device. So disappointing.
anyway next up is The Battle. THis is theone where the Ferengi drag back Picard's earlier ship, the Stargazer and pretty soon hes lost in old memories of the last battle he fought in it. This one was also kind of disappointing. I mean not bad but not the kind of story that really hits you inthe brain and makes you go OW!

I know what you mean about the Edo "god". It was a bit of a deus ex machina.
Yes, "The Battle" wasn't one of the best, either. It seems kind of strange that Starfleet would just leave an abandoned ship floating around like that. Was there any hint about why they couldn't find it again?

I've watched all the episodes in seasons 2-7 but never saw season 1. I've heard it's not as good as the other seasons...do you think that is true and why? And do you think I should watch season 1?

the first season in any show is the most important, show how they meet, how they resolve differences and such and how they evolve their friendships and their capabilities. even though seeing it now might make it seem a little out of date, i definately would recommend watching it

You may have gotten the idea from out discussion that the stories were not as good in the first season, but as Admiral Spock says, you do also get a feel for how the characters started as perfect strangers but gradually got accustomed to one another. Just brace yourself for Wesley, because he is at his most insufferable here. I'm pretty sure this is the origin of many fans' intense dislike of him.

So true Atoz and Spock, season 1 probably is important to watch if only to get the foundation down of how the Enterprise crew met. I'll have to watch 'em and post back as to what my thoughts were. Thanks for your feedback.

If you missed season one, you don't know Tasha Yar, so when she turns up in "Yesterdays' Enterprise" (season three), who won't know who she is. And likewise for Minuet in "Future Imperfect" (season four). They do get better towards the end of the season, like "11001001", "We'll Always Have Paris", "Conspiracy" and "The Neutral Zone".
Anyway, next up after "The Battle" is "Haven". This is where we first meet Lwaxana Troi, when she comes aboard to arrange the wedding of Deanna and an old friend of the family named Wyatt Miller.

Yeah Haven is the one with the starship drifting along full of refugees with Talaxian plague, wasn't it? This is one that rarely gets shown on television. I only vaguely remember it. I thought that Wyatt was a betazoid because he was in telepathic contact with that woman on the plague ship.

Yes, that was the part that really made me stop and think. I guess it was supposed to be really "romantic", the fact that he had dreamed about this girl his entire life, but to me the idea that telepathic contact could be made from that great a distance was just pushing credulity WAY too far into the ozone for my taste. As I recall, this really made me wonder if I wanted to invest my time in watching this new Star Trek series!

I'm not a big fan of stories about telapathy either. I kind of liked Troi and this guy trying to get to know one other, trying to decide if they really wanted to get married just because their parents had arranged it.

I remember in Babylon 5 I had the same problem, with the telepaths the Centauri used to transmit important messages instantly across interstellar distances. Someone on another forum brought up the question: shouldn't even ESP travel at the speed of light? I said that was like straining at a gnat and swallowing a camel.
